Length:  11.65 miles beginning and ending at the Slate Cr Trailhead that forms a loop beginning at the end of FS Road #30380.

Elevation:   7,025 ft (approx.) at jct with Slate Cr Trail, 8,161 ft at Bear Paw Pass (High Point of Slate Creek Trail #4215)

Open to:  Motorized Use (seasonally from July 1 to November 30), between milepost 2.54 and milepost 6.28 seasonal motorized use between July 1 and September 9. Entire trail open to Hikers and Equestrian.

Trail Highlights:

  • This trail begins at the Slate Cr Trailhead accessed via FS Road #30380in the Upper Gros Ventre Corridor. The motorized trail #4215 heads both, north and east through sagebrush flats, rolling hills, open meadows, timbered ridges, across creeks and over three trail passes (McKinney, Bear Paw and Lightning).  The Slate Creek Motorized Trail system is the premier OHV riding area on the Jackson Ranger District. The trail system provides motorized recreation opportunities, as well as access to fishing and popular hunting camps in a remote area of the Mount Leidy Highlands and Upper

Gros Ventre Corridor. The trail junctions are signed and multiple loop opportunities exist. Motorized use is open between July 1 and November 30.

Options:

  • This trail has multiple access points.  There are additional loop options off of this trail as many other trail spurs and trail loops, both motorized and non-motorized trails connect with the Slate Creek Trail #4215. Most motorized users access the trail system via the Slate Creek Trailhead or the Dallas Lake/Lightning Pass Trail southeast of the Slate Creek Loop Trail. 

Important Information

  • Access to the Slate Creek Trail from the Slate Creek Trailhead requires a crossing of the Gros Ventre River which can be hazardous and is not normally safe to cross until mid July.
  • The area where this trail exists is prime Grizzly Bear habitat.
  • This trail is located on USGS quad maps for Mount Leidy and Green Mountain, 7.5 minute.
  • Always check the posted information at the kiosks for maps, updated material on forest regulations and closures.

This trail can be accessed from the Slate Cr Trailhead for motorized use. Non-motorized use can access this trail from the Slate Cr Trailhead, Trail 4215A, 4215B, 4215C and the Lightning Cr Trail #4216 from the southwest. See Jackson R.D. MVUM (page 9 and 11)
