Joaquin Canyon Trail #47

Area Status: Open
This area is Open

Access:
This trail begins on top of Mesa de Las Viejas off of Forest Road 131E.  Access begins at the West Rim Vista Trailhead.  From this point, follow the existing Continental Divide National Scenic Trail signs.  The trail is located close to the edge of the Mesa.  A future reroute will relocate the trail right to the edge and then drop into Joaquin Canyon.

Attractions and Considerations:
Spectacular scenery at the edge of Mesa de Las Viejas is one of the key draws to the trail.  Several switchbacks down into Joaquin Canyon are something to consider before taking horses or someone who may not be an experienced hiker.  Further down into Joaquin Canyon, the trail continues into the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest.

Recommended Season:
The trail is accessible only during March through October, depending on snow and mud.   Travel is not recommended during monsoon rains due to poor road conditions.
