Attractions and Considerations:

Hart Trail is located in ponderosa, pinon pine, and Juniper trees. This is a very scenic trail that heads down into the Chama River Canyon Wilderness from the canyon rim. Hart Trail is great for hiking and fishing at the Chama River, horseback riding, backpacking, and picnicking. The vistas offer great opportunities for photography. The trail begins at the edge of the canyon and descends 400 feet within a 1/2 mile after several switch-backs.

Recommended Season:

The trail is generally accessible between May through October, depending on snow and mud.Travel is not recommended during monsoon rains (typically June-August) due to poor road conditions.

PLEASE NOTE:  The Hart Trail has not been maintained in several years.  Trail may be hard to follow at the bottom of the canyon.

General Information



North on U. S. Highway 84 from Espanola approximately 52 miles. South from Chama 44 miles. Turn west on Forest Road 145. A trail marker sign will direct you to the Hart Trail several miles west. The first 3 miles of the road passes through private property, please stay on the main road and drive slow. Gate on private property may be closed. Please close gate as you drive through. Follow signs.
