Horse Creek Recreation Area CCC Picnic ShelterHorse Creek Recreation Area is located eight miles from Greeneville, off TN 107 north. This recreation area is nestled into a hardwood cove beside its namesake, Horse Creek.

There are facilities for camping and day-use activities including hiking, fishing, picnicking and swimming.  During the 1930’s, a rustic picnic pavilion and swimming area were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Company 1455, Camp Cordell Hull, stationed in Unicoi, TN.

  • Camping fee is $10 per night.
  • The pavilion can be reserved for a $30 per day fee. Reservations for the pavilion are made through Recreation.gov either online or call 1-877-444-6777.

Restrictions:
  • Camping and picnicking are on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Group size is 5 people, 2 vehicles per site.
  • No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the area.
  • Food storage restrictions apply at all areas on the Cherokee National Forest. All food and beverages must be stored in an approved bear-proof container, your locked vehicle or hard-sided camper at all times unless being eaten, prepared, or transported.

Directions:

From Greeneville, take TN 107 north for six miles. Turn right at Horse Creek Road and follow the signs about two miles to the recreation area.

Activities

Campground Camping

Horse Creek Recreation Area offers camping opportunities for tents and RVs. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring and lantern post. Six of the 15 campsites are walk-in tent sites.  The remaining sites can accomodate up to a 24 foot camper.

River and Stream Fishing

There are several native trout streams within and nearby Horse Creek Recreation Area. See Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency for permits as well as rules and regulations on fishing.

Picnicking

There are two areas for picnicking in the Horse Creek Recreation Area, one upstream and one downstream of the campground.
