Looking to camp near a large lake? Try Little Oak Recreation Area, located on a peninsula along the eastern shore of South Holston Lake in Sullivan County. In this campground, most of the 68 universally-accessible sites have lake views and many have direct access. Little Oak is a designated Watchable Wildlife Area with two interpretive trails. A concrete boat ramp provides a popular launch site into South Holston Lake, and is for use by registered campers. Most of the campsites are reservable by going to Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777 for your convenience.

Current Conditions: Closed until at least May 15, 2020 to safeguard the health of employees and the public. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we all work together to minimize the impacts and spread of COVID-19.
Operational Hours: Gate opens at 7 AM and closes at 10 PM.  All loops are closed for the season.  The hydrants, showerhouse, and dumpstation have been winterized. 
Reservations: Reservations can be made on Recreation.gov. You may make your reservations 4 days to 6 months in advance of your arrival. You may choose to camp in a site that is not yet reserved for a recommended maximum of 2 nights.

Fees Camping is $12 per site starting late April thru mid-October, including water and hot showers. $10 per site during shoulder seasons with limited facilities including no water (early thru late-April and mid-October thru end of season, or when water is not available).
Open Season: 5/15/2020 - 11/16/2020
Restrictions:
  • Sites are limited to a single family or not more than 5 people and 2 vehicles.
  • No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the area.
  • No burning of plastic or other non-wood products except charcoal in campfires.
  • Food storage restrictions apply at all areas on the Cherokee National Forest. All food and beverages must be stored in an approved bear-proof container, your locked vehicle or hard-sided camper at all times unless being eaten, prepared, or transported.

Information Center: Groups of up to 20 individuals are encouraged to reserve sites 24-27. There is an adjacent play field and separate lake cove well suited for group activities. All campground rules apply.

Directions:

From Bristol, take US 421 south for 12 miles, and turn right onto paved Camp Tom Howard Road. After 0.5 miles, this road becomes Forest Road #87. Continue on Road #87 for six miles. Turn right on Road #87G for 1.5 miles to Little Oak.  National forest visitors can also access Little Oak Recreation Area off NFSR 87 from US HWY 421 and from State Route 44 near Hickory Tree via County Road 2269 – NFSR 251.

Campground Camping

Little Oak Recreation Area offers camping opportunities for tents and RV's up to 30 foot. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, firering and lantern post.

Group Camping

Little Oak Campground, sites 24-27, offers group camping.  Sites can be reserved through Recreation.gov.  Group camping adjoins a playing field and lake cove for group activities.  Will accommodate up to 20 individuals at the 4 sites.  Maximum 5 people and 2 vehicles per campsite.  All campground rules apply.
