Looking to camp near a large lake? Try Little Oak Recreation Area, located on a peninsula along the eastern shore of South Holston Lake in Sullivan County. In this campground, most of the 68 universally-accessible sites have lake views and many have direct access. Little Oak is a designated Watchable Wildlife Area with two interpretive trails. A concrete boat ramp provides a popular launch site into South Holston Lake, and is for use by registered campers. Most of the campsites are on for your convenience.

Reservations: Reservations can be made on You may make your reservations 4 days to 6 months in advance of your arrival. You may choose to camp in a site that is not yet reserved for a recommended maximum of 2 nights.

Fees Camping is $12 per site May thru September, including water and hot showers. $10 per site during shoulder seasons with limited facilities, no water (April through May and September through October or when water is not available).
Open Season: 04/02/2018 - 11/16/2018
  • Sites are limited to a single family or not more than 5 people and 2 vehicles.
  • No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the area.
  • No burning of plastic or other non-wood products except charcoal in campfires.
  • Food storage restrictions apply at all areas on the Cherokee National Forest. All food and beverages must be stored in an approved bear-proof container, your locked vehicle or hard-sided camper at all times unless being eaten, prepared, or transported.

Information Center: Groups of up to 20 individuals are encouraged to reserve sites 24-27. There is an adjacent play field and separate lake cove well suited for group activities. All campground rules apply.

General Information


From Bristol, take US 421 south for 12 miles, and turn right onto paved Camp Tom Howard Road. After 0.5 miles, this road becomes Forest Road #87. Continue on Road #87 for six miles. Turn right on Road #87G for 1.5 miles to Little Oak.  **Please Note** A portion of Flatwoods Road (NFSR 87) is closed approximately 3 miles NE of U.S. Highway 19E and 5 miles SW of the intersection of NFSR 251.  There is no through traffic permitted at this time. National forest visitors can still access Little Oak Recreation Area off NFSR 87 from US HWY 421 and from State Route 44 near Hickory Tree via County Road 2269 – NFSR 251.
