Smith Rapids Campground

Area Status: Closed
This area is Closed

This summer the majority of our recreation sites will be open providing a safe and enjoyable recreation experience, however, due to decreasing visitors and increasing operational costs we will be reducing and eliminating services at roughly 11 percent of the Forest’s developed recreation areas.

The Smith Rapids Campground is one of the 11 percent and will be closed for the 2015 camping season. This closure only impacts the campground - the picnic area will still be open with vehicle access and parking available providing river and horse trail access. The toilet building will be available, the picnic area will be mowed, public water supply available, and garbage service available. Twin Lakes and Sailor Lake campgrounds are two other Forest Service campgrounds near Smith Rapids. To find additional camping opportunities in Price County please visit

The campground has 11 sites and is located on the South fork of the Flambeau River. It provides an ideal focal point for hiking, river fishing, horseback riding (campsite equipped with tie stalls and trailer parking designed for horse camping) and canoeing. Seven campsites are designed to accommodate horse trailers with extra long parking spurs, hitching rails, picnic tables, and fire grills.

A carry-in boat access, vault toilets and day use picnic area are also provided. There is also an additional parking lot across the road from the picnic area for equestrian use. A special feature near this campground is the Smith Rapids Covered Bridge.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest welcomes your feedback as we work to balance operational costs and funding levels to meet our customers’ expectations in developing our future recreation program. Comment cards and an online comment forum are available.
