Swan Lake


Swan Lake is a 52 acre, 95’ deep lake at 3,641’ elevation. Excellent for casual hiking, moderate level mountain biking, fly fishing and large group picnicking and camping. 

History: Swan Lake Kitchen was originally built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and was historically preserved in 2009.

Remanence from the North Star wildfire of 2015, which burned over 5,000 acres in the surrounding area, including patches throughout the entire riparian of Swan Lake can be seen here.

  • Quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Campfire in developed fire ring only

General Information


From Republic Ranger Station:  Take E Tessie Blvd and E Delaware Ave. Turn right onto WA-21 S/S Clark Ave Continue to follow WA-21 S for 6.8 miles.  Turn right onto NF-53 for 7.3 miles.  Slight left at Old Scatter Creek Rd for 0.1 mile.

General Notes:

Swan Lake is a beautifully clear, quiet lake with an abundance of recreation opportunity and wildlife viewing. A pair of resident loons can be viewed here throughout most of the summer.   

Swan Lake Kitchen is a historical site, suited for up to 35 people, on the north end of the lake near the swimming beach available for reservation through Recreation.gov. Along with a stone fireplace, Swan Lake Kitchen group campground also provides drinking water, a campfire ring, several picnic tables, vault toilets.

There is a public boat launch which is located at the southeast end of the lake, and a swim beach further north. There is a large parking lot near the boat launch for vehicles and trailers. Access to shoreline fishing and boat fishing is good as there are multiple trails leading from the campground to openings along the eastern riparian shore.

Campground Camping

Campers can look forward 21 campsites with picnic tables and fire pits, 4 walk-in campsites with picnic tables and fire pits. Swan lake also offers a day use area with a sandy beach, 2 swimming docks, boat launch, fishing dock, drinking water, vault toilets and garbage disposal.  Campgrounds are first come, first served.

Day Hiking

Recreation areas with activity Day Hiking:

Swan Lake Trail #14, an easy loop hiking trail, follows the shore of Swan Lake. You will see a trail sign near the parking area entrance. There is also a moderate bike trail to the right of the entrance, a short way up FSR 5300500. From the main walking trail, there’s a side path called Swan Lake Butte Trail.
