Nick Eaton Trail (#447)


Area Status: Open

This steep trail begins at approximately mile 2.0 of Herman Creek Trail #406, connecting to Gorton Creek Trail #408 and other junctions along its route. The trail is in wilderness. Of its total length of 4.7 miles, 3.5 miles are in the Scenic Area. 

WARNING: Upper portions of Nick Eaton Ridge were severely affected by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire. In places, the tread has been obliterated or is very faint, and no maintenance work has been done. Good route-finding skills are necessary.

Restrictions: Motor vehicles and bikes are prohibited. Fires not allowed within 200 feet of trail.

General Information

Directions:

Herman Creek Trailhead & Campground is located just east of Cascade Locks and 47 miles from Portland.

From Portland, OR: Travel east on Interstate 84 to Cascade Locks, exit # 44. Drive under the interstate and through town approximately 1.8 miles to the eastbound entrance ramp. At the stop sign, cross the road and drive east 1.6 miles on Forest Land toward Oxbow Fish Hatchery, then on to Herman Creek Trailhead.

From Hood River, OR: Travel west on Interstate 84 to Herman Creek exit # 47. Drive 0.6 mile west on Forest Lane to Herman Creek Trailhead.


Activities

Day Hiking

The Nick Eaton trail is about 2 Miles up the Herman Creek trail. Consult a map as junctions with many other trails offer a variety of experiences.

Backpacking

Several overnight loops can be made. Please consult a good, up to date map when planning your hike.

Viewing Scenery

There are viewpoints at miles 4.1 and 4.2.
