Larch Mountain Trail (#441)

Area Status: Open
This area is Open

Connecting Multnomah Falls Recreation Area to Larch Mountain Day Use Area, this 6.8 mile trail winds through old-growth forest and offers views of spectacular waterfalls including Multnomah, Wisendanger and Ecola. The lush forest canopy and cooling effect of the waterfalls can be refreshing, even on a hot day.

Begin on the stairs at the lower viewing platform of Multnomah Falls and climb to the iconic Benson Bridge. At this point, the trail is still paved but steeply ascends a series of switchbacks up the slope east of the falls. With 2 million visitors each year to Multnomah Falls, expect crowds for the first mile to the overlook.

This trail offers incredible views of the Multnomah, Wisendanger and Ecola falls (including a view from the top of Multnomah Falls).  Once at Larch Mountain Trailhead, hike the additional 0.3 miles up Sherrand Point Trail #443 for views of Mt. Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Hood on a clear day!

Note: Larch Mountain Road is maintained by Multnomah County and is closed annually at milepost 10 from Nov. through late May or early June. Use caution when driving; the road is narrow in places with limited visibility and is very popular with road cyclists.
