The Eight Mile Guard Station is a short drive from Soda Springs, Idaho. It was established as early as 1908. Several buildings have appeared on this site, although most were replaced or relocated. The current cabin was built in 1962.

The guard station can be accessed by car during the warmer months, but only snowmobiles or skis can be used in winter.

The cabin has 2 bedrooms with 4 bunkbeds (no mattresses are provided).  The bathroom has a seasonal flushable toilet and shower (may be available from 06/01 to 09/15).  A vault toilet is available for winter months.  The kitchen has a propane range and oven for cooking.  There is a dining room with a table and chairs and a large living room with seating.   There is also an outdoor fire pit with seating and a Dutch oven table. There is a large garage pavilion with tables and chairs for outdoor dining.  The living room has a gas furnace and a wood stove for heating.  The cabin is equipped with propane lights.  Please plan to bring your own drinking water.

This facility is perfect for large groups or family reunions.  Hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, atv use, and hiking are among some of the activities surrounding the cabin. Recreational amenities at the cabin include a volleyball court, basketball court, swing set, and children’s play house.  There are large areas next to the cabin for tent camping.  Some RV parking is available.

General Information


The Eightmile Guard Station is located 11 miles southwest of Soda Springs, ID.  In Soda Springs, turn south onto 3rd East and travel about 5 miles.  Before the Baily Creek Sub-division turn left onto Eightmile road.  Head south 3 miles to the Eightmile Canyon Road junction and turn right. Follow the Eightmile Canyon road south for 5 miles to the forest boundary.  The Guard Station is on the right at the forest boundary. Maps are available upon request at the district office.
