West Rosebud Trail (# 19)

  

West Rosebud Trail (# 19) is 5.7 miles long and is a popular daytrip offering spectacular views of Mystic Lake. This is one of two popular routes which provide access to Granite Peak, the highest peak in Montana. Elevation change: 1200 feet. The trail is open for the following uses: hiking. This trail is open for horseback riding ONLY during hunting season.

* The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness boundary is close to the border of Mystic Lake. Please be aware that travelling in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness comes with additional regulations. Please know where the boundary is and what is expected of visitors before entering the wilderness.

Distance to:

  • Dam at east end of Mystic Lake:                  3.0 miles
  • Phantom Creek Trail (#17) junction:            3.5 miles
  • Bridge over Huckleberry Creek:                   5.7 miles

*Beyond Huckleberry Creek, you can cross a log jam to continue to Island and Silver Lakes. The log jam can be slippery and the trail beyond is not maintained.

Directions from district office:
Drive north on US Hwy 212 for 2.1 miles and turn left (west) onto MT-78. Drive 30 miles and turn left (west) onto MT-419 towards Fishtail. Drive 4.4 miles (through Fishtail) and turn left (south) onto West Rosebud Rd. Drive 6.5 miles and turn left (south) to continue on West Rosebud Rd. Drive 14.1 miles to the trailhead. There is ample parking and limited room for horse trailers. There is a vault toilet at trailhead.
