Wildcat Trail #490, located on London Ranger District, starts at the interpretive site at Camp Wildcat and ends at Hoosier Knob. Camp Wildcat is the site of the first engagement of regular troops in Kentucky during the Civil War.

Camp Wildcat is in Laurel County on Wildcat Mountain. This remote site is reached by a narrow gravel road. The site has a pavilion with interpretive signs, parking area, trails and vault toilets.

 Note: The road to Wildcat is a narrow gravel county road that under some conditions may not be passable by low clearance vehicles. Call the London office for information about road conditions. You may need to pull over to the side to accommodate a vehicle coming from the opposite direction. You will encounter several curves that are hard to see around, and a steep section towards the end. 

  • Wildcat Trail is closed to horse use and motorized vehicles.
  • Camping and firebuilding in rock shelters is prohibited.
  • Disturbing or collecting artifacts is prohibited.

Camp Wildcat is the site of the first engagement of regular troops in Kentucky during the Civil War. The site is undeveloped and remote, reached only by a single-lane gravel road. The Forest Service works with volunteers and heritage groups to interpret and protect Camp Wildcat.

Help preserve Kentucky's past by not disturbing or collecting historical or archaeological artifacts. Report any discoveries to the nearest Forest Service office. All artifacts are protected by law.

This trail does not meet accessibility standards for persons with disabilities. 


Take I-75 exit 49 (Livingston exit). Turn east and go 0.6-mile on 909, and then turn south onto US 25. Go 0.7-mile and turn left onto Hazel Patch Road. Take a left at the sign directing you to Camp Wildcat.


Parking is available at the trailhead at Camp Wildcat.
