Sheltowee Trace Trail #100 Section 23 Wildcat

Sheltowee Trace Section 23 Wildcat of the Sheltowee Trace, located on London Ranger District, crosses the Rockcastle River and follows KY 490 for 1.5 miles. The trail leaves the road and winds up a ridge and back down to Denny Branch. The trail comes to Forest Service Road 4078 where it follows paved and gravel roadway for the next 8 miles (to its junction with Forest Service Road 736), leading to the Camp Wildcat battlefield monument.

The first formal engagement of Civil War troops in Kentucky occurred at Camp Wildcat. Interpretive signs at this location describe the battle.

The Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail continues south down the gravel road (KY 737) into the drainage of Shetland Creek and eventually joins Forest Service Road 760, which is paved. The trail follows this road to US 25 and turns north. An interpretive sign on the west side of US 25 tells the story of the Wilderness Road. The trail crosses I-75 on KY 909, where a gas station and store are available.
