Alum Trail #612

Area Status: Open

Alum Trail #612 is located on Stearns District of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Follow the gravel road to the powerline. Turn right into the powerline, following the carved steps in the cliff. Turn left, following the cliffline. The trail descends from here until reaching the creek.

Rhododendron, mountain laurel and hemlock are abundant along the trail. There are several stream crossings with stepping stones.

After 1.75 miles, you will reach the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area boundary. The trail continues on for another 1/4-mile before reaching the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail and the Big South Fork River. If you should choose to continue along the trail, you may exit at either Yamacraw Bridge to the south or at Alum Ford Boat Ramp to the north.

Directions:

From US 27 in Whitley City, take KY 700 west. Follow KY 700 approximately 3 miles. The trailhead is a gated road on the left.

General Notes:

Nearby Facilities: Alum Ford Campground is part of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, which is managed by the National Park Service. This area is open all year with picnic tables, chemical toilets, and primitive campsites.

Parking:

You may park on the side of the gravel road, but please do not block the gate.
