Chief Paulina Horse Camp

Chief Paulina Campsite

This campground is located near Paulina Lake in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. This is the only horse campground in the caldera and provides the horse enthusiast a great way to sight-see throughout the entire monument area. There are a couple of resorts nearby for camping supplies and restaurants.

There is no drinking water at this site, only a water pump for horses. There is also no cell phone coverage.

NOTE: Holders of a Golden Age and Golden Access Passports and Senior and Access Passes are entitled to the following discounts on expanded amenity recreation fees: -  A 50 percent discount on the fee for a single camping unit. This discount does not apply to use of a cabin, lookout, double camping unit, triple camping unit, group camping unit, extra vehicle fees, or any additional camping units and separately charged utility, water, hook-up or day use fees.

  • Maximum site spur length is 50 feet.
  • As part of a larger effort to reduce invasive species on national forest lands, weed-free feed is required on the Deschutes National Forest. Locate a weed-free feed vendor near you.

Horse Camping

The spurs are large with double or quadruple corrals. Campers should come prepared, while there is a water pump for the livestock, there is no drinking water.  The roads are unpaved as are the spurs.   The sites are all back in, but are ample for most situations.
