Chief Paulina Campsite

This campground is located near Paulina Lake in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. This is the only horse campground in the caldera and provides the horse enthusiast a great way to sight-see throughout the entire monument area. There are a couple of resorts nearby for camping supplies and restaurants.

There is no drinking water at this site, only a water pump for horses. There is also no cell phone coverage.

Operational Hours: **2021 update: This campground will open for first come, first served camping from Friday, June 4 at 7 a.m. through Friday, June 11. After that, reservations are required.** Visit for current operating dates and to make a reservation.

Fees Per night, per site fee: 2-horse stalls: $14/first vehicle; $7/each additional vehicle.  4-horse stalls: $18/first vehicle; $7/each additional vehicle.  There is a nearby RV Dump station at the entry of Paulina Lake campground: $10 For reservations visit
NOTE: Holders of a Senior Pass Annual/Lifetime (previously known as Golden Age Passport) and of Access Passes are entitled to the following discounts on expanded amenity recreation fees:
- 50 percent discount on the fee for a single camping unit. This discount does not apply to use of a cabin, lookout, double camping unit, triple camping unit, group camping unit, extra vehicle fees, or any additional camping units and separately charged utility, water, hook-up or day use fees.

From Bend, OR: Travel 24 miles south on Highway 97, then 14 miles east on Paulina Lake Road (County Road 21).

Horse Camping

The spurs are large with double or quadruple corrals. Campers should come prepared, while there is a water pump for the livestock, there is no drinking water.  The roads are unpaved as are the spurs.   The sites are all back in, but are ample for most situations.
