Cinder Hill Campsite

This campground is located along the shore of East Lake with several of the sites close to the shore and the rest within easy walking distance to the beach area. This campground offers excellent screening between sites in this campground and campers can likely find last minute available sites. It is the largest campground in Newberry Caldera and offers bird watching, bicycling, sightseeing, and canoeing. The Newberry Crater Trail #3958 and other connecting trails are accessible from the campground.

Current Conditions: Fall 2021 - Cinder Hill Day Use Area and Boat Launch are closed due to hazard tree mitigation work.
Operational Hours: **2021 update: This campground will open for first come, first served camping from Friday, June 4 at 7 a.m. through Friday, June 11. After that, reservations are required.** Visit for current operating dates and to make a reservation.

  • Camping: Per night, per site fee: Regular site: $18/first vehicle; $9/each additional vehicle.  Dump station at nearby Paulina Lake Campground: $10.
  • Day use: $5/vehicle/day or valid recreation pass at Cinder Hill Boating Site.

Restrictions: Maximum site spur length is 30 feet.

  • Camping: 50% discount for single site camping with any of these passes: Interagency Senior, Interagency Access, Golden Age, or Golden Access.

General Information


From Bend, OR: Travel 23.5 miles south on Highway 97, then 17.6 miles east on Paulina Lake Road (County Road 21), and 0.5 miles north on Forest Road 2100 700.  Cinder Hill is the last campground that you come to on the road past Paulina and East Lakes in the Newberry Caldera.

Campground Camping

 The campground is large and can accommodate over 100 camping groups. It is an ideal site for those hauling trailers as it has ample amounts of long pull through sites, but it also has plenty of sites perfect for tent campers and RV campers. This is a campground though that is seldom full even in this popular area, and is great for the last minute camper.
