Snell Lake Trail

Area Status: Temporarily Closed

This trail meanders through stands of mature lodgepole and mountain hemlock and provides access to Effie, Snell, and Meek Lakes. 

This trail provides access to Diamond Peak Wilderness to the north and the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area to the south via Meek Lake Trail #43.1 which leads past Meek Lake to Summit Lake Trail #46.

You can access Snell Lake Trail #43 (and Meek Lake Trail #43.1) at Snell/Meek Lake trailhead west of Crescent Lake. Snell Lake Trail #43 can also be accessed by Crater Butte Trail #44.

Current Conditions: July 24, 2024 - This area is currently closed due to the Red Fire Area Emergency Closure.
Permit Info: Wilderness Permits are required for both day use and overnight stays from June 15 through October 15. Free permits are self-issued at the trailhead.
Restrictions:
  • Wilderness restrictions apply
  • Motorized and mechanical equipment (including bicycles and drones) are prohibited in the Wilderness
  • Groups must be under 12 people and 12 head of stock
  • Build campfires at least 100 feet away from water
  • Pack in / Pack out!
  • “Take only pictures, leave only footprints” — please refrain from cutting, damaging, or gathering vegetation or other forest items (e.g. rocks, artifacts, etc.)
  • Please bury human waste 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet away from water

General Information

Directions:

To the Snell/Meek Lake trailhead:

From Crescent, OR- Travel 12.2 miles west on County Road 61, then go 3.5 miles north on Hwy 58 to Crescent Lake Junction. From the junction go towards Crescent Lake and take Forest Road 60 swest for 5 miles. Turn right on Forest Service Road #6010 going to Summit Lake. Approximately 5 miles up Forest Road #6010, Snell Lake Trail #43 crosses the road.
