Provides access to: South Climb #183 which enters Mt Adams Wilderness and is a major route to Mt Adams Summit.

Two main parking areas in Cold Springs Campground, at the trailhead, can fill up quickly during the summer season. 

Drive with caution; traffic can be heavy in the high season.  Road is steep and narrow, with sharp switchbacks. No RVs or trailers.

Current Conditions: 6/04/2020: The Mt. Adams climbing permit system has changed this season. Purchase your digital pass online at http://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/74420. There is not a limit on the total number of passes sold per day, so there is not a chance of running out of passes. It may be advisable to wait until close to your climbing date to purchase your pass to see if the weather is going to be favorable. Contact the Mt. Adams Ranger District 509-395-3402 for further information.

Permit Info: For Wilderness travel at low elevation or during the climbing off-season, Wilderness Permits are required. Wilderness permits are free and self-issued at trailheads.

  • Recreation Passes may be used as a form of fee payment. A valid Cascades Volcano Pass stub may be used as fee payment between May 1 and Sept. 30. Cascades Volcano Passes are not available on-site.  
  • Cascade Volcano Pass required if climbing on trail above 7000 feet between May 1 and Sept. 30.

Directions:

From Trout Lake, Washington take Mt Adams Road north to the V intersection with Forest Road 23. At this intersection stay to the right and continue about one mile to the left turn on to Forest Road 80, signed South Climb. Stay on Forest Road 80 to where it ends at the intersection with Forest Road 8040 and 8031. Make a right turn on to Forest Road 8040 and continue driving north past Morrison Creek Campground to South Climb Trailhead located in the old Cold Springs Camp area.
