Forest Road 83 passes through lava flows and mudflows from earlier eruptions and provides access to Climber's Bivouac, Ape Cave, and Lava Canyon.

Current Conditions: Road is paved, but does have some potholes. Light and shadows on the road make them hard to spot. Drive with caution.
Fees
  • $5/vehicle/day or valid Recreation Pass at most recreation sites. See Mount St. Helens Map for fee and payment sites.
  • December 1 to March 31: Washington State Sno-Park Permit required at Sno-Parks (see Permit Information section)
Permit Info: Dec. 1 to March 31: Washington State Sno-Park Permit required at Trail of Two Forest, Cougar and Marble Mountain Sno-Parks. Permits not available on site. Purchase in advance online or at a vendor before visiting.

Directions:

From Cougar, WA take Lewis River Road/Forest Road 90 east for 6.4 miles then go left on Forest Road 83.
