Forest Road 83

Area Status: Open

Paved, but rough in places, Forest Road 83 passes over ancient lava flows and a mudflow from the 1980 eruption. The road provides access to Ape Cave (spur road 8303), Climber’s Bivouac (Forest Road 81, then 830) as well as Marble Mountain Sno-Park, and June Lake, Ape Canyon and Lava Canyon trailheads. Lahar Viewpoint provides visitors with a beautiful view of the south (non-crater) side of Mount St. Helens.

Current Conditions: 12/30/2024: Forest Road 83 is plowed and clear to Marble Mountain Sno-Park. Icy conditions may exist, particularly at higher elevations. Traction tires or chains are recommended. 
Permit Info: Dec. 1 to March 31: Washington State Sno-Park Permit required at Trail of Two Forest, Cougar and Marble Mountain Sno-Parks. Permits not available on site. Purchase in advance online or at a vendor before visiting.

Directions:

From Cougar, WA take Lewis River Road/Forest Road 90 east for 6.4 miles then go left on Forest Road 83.
