Backbone Horse Campground

Backbone Horse Campground is a small, semi-primitive campground designed primarily for campers or picnickers that bring horses with them.

At a Glance

Current Conditions: Designated campgrounds are no longer maintained after the summer recreation season. Users may continue to recreate in the area however, some sites may not be accessible and amenities, such as restrooms and water, may not be available. Please contact the local Ranger Station for current conditions.
Operational Hours:
  • Open year round for hiking
  • Campground is open from Memorial Day through November. 
  • All trails designated for horses are closed to horseback riding from March 15th to May 1st. This is due to muddy trail conditions and the increased potential for erosion and trail damage.
Reservations:
  • All campsites are available on a first come first serve basis.  
  • Sites #5-9 are reserved for horseback users from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
  • Remaining sites can be used by both non-horse users and horse users
 
Fees: Camping fee:
  • $15.00/night for each site. 
Day Use Fee:
  • $5.00/day for day ride only 
Restrictions: Camping rules: 
  • Maximum stay is 14 days in any 30-day period.
  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times.
  • Quiet Hours are 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  • Check out time is 2:00 PM.
Closest Towns: Hector, NY
Water: There is a nonpotable hydrant along the trail north of the campground for watering livestock only.
Restroom: Three vault toilets available.

Directions:

From the South: Take State Route 14 North (Exit 52 off State Route 17) to Watkins Glen, NY. In Watkins Glen, turn right at the Fourth St intersec-tion onto State Route 414 North. Go approxi-mately 9 miles north, past the Hector Ranger Sta-tion of the Finger Lakes National Forest. 0.5 miles past the Ranger Station, turn right on Schuyler County Route 2. Travel for 3.5 miles east. Back-bone Campground is on the left, opposite the in-tersection with Burnt Hill Road.

From the North: Take State Route 414 South to Hector, NY (Exit 41 off I-90). In Hector, 1 mile past the Dandy Mini Mart, turn left onto County Route 2, the second asphalt road on the left. Travel for 3.5 miles east. Backbone Campground is on the left, opposite the intersection with Burnt Hill Road.

Activities

Campground Camping

There are 11 sites available on a first come first serve basis. Sites #5-9 are reserved for horseback users from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.

The sites are large enough to accommodate trailers. The campground has three vault toilets, trash cans, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills at some sites.

Horse Camping

All sites are large enough to accommodate horse trailers. Each site has tie posts for horses and there is a corral in the area. The campground has three vault toilets, trash cans, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills at some sites.
