Little Pond Trail

This 2.75 mile trail follows rough mulit-use forest roads before eventually splitting into a hiking-only section that enters into the Glastenbury Wilderness for a short trip to Little Pond. Along the road section of the trail are views created by utility access areas that are also managed for snowmobile use in the winter. This out-and-back trail connects to sections of the Appalachian/Long Trail for longer hikes and for viewes at Porcupine Lookout or Little Pond Lookout.

From the trailhead, the trail follows a very rough Forest Road 275 in a gradual ascent to Little Pond. The first half mile of this road also serves as a driveway for a local adjacent landowner. Please park in the established parking lot and avoid blocking the road.

In just over a half mile, a power line is reached where there are views to the east and west. This powerline and remainder of the road is also managed for snowmobile use in the winter. The road meanders through mixed hardwood and spruce habitat and areas managed for apple trees. At approximately 2.25 miles the road ends and the trail splits. The snowmobile trail continues east (right) and downhill to the Pine Valley area.

The hiking trail continues north into the Glastenbury Wilderness and ends at Little Pond in just under .5 mile. Mechanized equipment, including bicycles are prohibited in wilderness areas. Longer hikes can be made by taking the spur trail from the Little Pond Access trail to the Appalachian/Long Trail. This footpath, a little less traveled, connects to the Appalachian/Long Trail in about a ½ mile.

From there the AT/LT heads south (left) to Porcupine Lookout in about .5 mile, or heads north (right) to Little Pond Lookout in about 1.0 mile and Little Pond Mountain in another 0.5 miles. Nice views are attained at any of these vantage points.

From Route 7 in Bennington, the trailhead is 9.5 miles east on Route 9. The parking area is found on the north side of Route 9.

From Route 100 in Wilmington, the trailhead is about 12.0 miles west on Rte 9. The parking area is found on the north side of Route 9.
