Black Bear Cabin

Black Bear at Mesa Lakes cabin sits within aspen and spruce/fir forest on the north side of the Grand Mesa National Forest. Black Bear cabin is part of the Mesa Lakes Ranger Station Complex. The original Black Bear cabin was constructed in the 1930s . The cabin is located off Colorado State Highway 65, about a 45 minute drive from Grand Junction area of western Colorado.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience an overnight stay in a traditional Forest Service Ranger Station. The semi-rustic cabin has a refrigerator, indoor plumbing including a shower and flush toilet (bathroom is downstairs in the basement) and an electric cooking stove. Basic cooking and eating utensils, plates, knives, forks, spoons, cups, and basic pots and pans are furnished. Cleaning supplies provided.  Electricity is available and provides the lighting and heat. Sleeping accommodations consist of 3 twin size beds and 1 queen size sofa sleeper, (air mattress or cots can be brought in to accommodate 8 adults). A large grass yard fronts the cabin which is perfect for family gatherings and weddings!

Directions:

From Grand Junction: If traveling along I-70 take Exit 49 (Grand Mesa Scenic & Historic Byway). Travel South on State Hwy 65 approximately 23 miles. Turn right into Mesa Lakes Recreation Area. Take second right towards Day Use parking area and bare left to gate to Mesa Lakes Ranger Station. Cabin is sign posted and parking is in front of the cabin.

From Cedaredge: Travel north on State Hwy 65 approximately 28 miles. Turn left into Mesa Lakes Recreation Area. Take second right towards Day use parking area and bare left to gate to Mesa Lakes Ranger Station. Cabin is sign posted and parking is in front of the cabin.

Black Bear cabin can be accessed by passenger vehicle with paved and gated access.

The Mesa Lakes Recreation area has 7 lakes within walking distance and includes a hand carry boat launch for canoes and non-motorized boating.
