Costo Lake #425

  

The Costo Lake Trail #425 begins at the Lowline Trail #438 and ends at Costo Lake. Its entire length is in the West Elk Wilderness where Wilderness Regulations apply.  This trail can be accessed by a variety of different trail which affords a large variety of scenery.  The elevation varies along the route with often significant gain and loss.  Please tether horses and stock 200 feet from the lake and camping is allowed but use existing campsites which are also 200 feet from the lake.  Trail Map

Parking:

Cliff Creek Trailhead:  T. 14S., R. 88W., Section 7.  U.S.G.S. Map: Anthracite Range.  Elevation: 8,831 feet.

Swampy Pass Trailhead:  T. 15S., R. 87W., Section 26.  U.S.G.S. Map: Mt. Axtel.  Elevation: 9,308 feet.


Directions:

Cliff Creek Trailhead:

From Crested Butte, travel west on County Road 12 for approximately 9 miles to the Cliff Creek Trailhead which is across from Horse Ranch Park. Hike south on the Cliff Creek Trail #840 for approximately 2.5 miles to its intersection with the Lowline Trail #438.  Continue south on the Lowline Trail for approximately 4 miles to its intersection with the Costo Lake Trail.

Swampy Pass Trailhead:

From Crested Butte, travel west on County Road 12 for approximately 5 miles to the Ohio Pass Road, CR #730.  Follow the Ohio Pass Road for approximately 4 miles to the Swampy Pass Trailhead.  Hike west on the Swampy Pass Trail #439 for approximately 1.25 miles to its intersection with the Pass Creek Trail #563.  Continue south on this trail for approximately 2.5 miles to its intersection with the Lowline Trail #438.  The Costo Lake Trail is approximately 1/4 mile south of this intersection.
