General Information

The upper trailhead for the West Salt Creek Trail can be accessed off of Forest Road #279 which forks off of Forest Road #260 and the Big Creek Road #121.  To access this trailhead, travel south from Collbran on County Road 58.5 which later becomes the Big Creek Road once it crosses the Grand Mesa National Forest boundary.  Just below Bonham Reservoir, FSR #260 forks left off of the Big Creek Road.  Turn left (northeast) at this intersection and travel approximately 1.1 miles on FSR #260 to its junction with FDR #279.  At this intersection turn left (northeast) and travel approximately 0.9 miles on FSR #279 to its intersection with FSR #279 1A.  Continue on FSR #279 for another 2.4 miles to the intersection of FSR #279 and the Salt Creek Western Trailhead.  This trailhead is located just past the cattle-guard/fenceline bordering Sheep Flats.

Another alternative for reaching the West Salt Creek Upper Trailhead is to travel 5.54 miles up the Salt Creek Trail from its lower (eastern) trailhead off the Park Creek Road.

The lower trailhead of the West Salt Creek Trail is inaccessible by motorized travel from the upper trailhead because of a slide approximately 0.9 miles down from the upper trailhead.
