Willow Reservoir #755

The Willow Reservoir Trail #755 forks off the Goodenough Reservoir Road, FSR #128.1C and travels through marshy high mountain meadows and Engelmann Spruce/Subalpine Fir stands up to Willow Reservoir itself. Willow Reservoir sits in a high altitude bowl just to the southwest of Mt. Darline which is a high point along the drainage divide between Leroux Creek and Terror Creek. This drainage divide also forms the boundary between the Grand Mesa (Grand Valley Ranger District) and the Gunnison National Forests (Paonia Ranger District). Crater Peak and Mt. Hatten are visable further to the north. The hike into the reservoir is not difficult because the elevation climb up to the lake at 10,400 feet is only about 200 feet higher than the trailhead and the hike is less than 1 ½ miles. The views from the reservoir are striking, especially to the east, because of the barren slopes above the reservoir that are the remains of the basalt flow.
