Smalley Mountain #531

The Smalley Mountain Trail #531 provides the best way to reach the lower trailhead of Hawxhurst Trail #530 or Hawxhurst Cow Camp, if coming from the Collbran area. The first two miles of the trail are largely aspen and open meadows; the last 2.3 miles are generally oak brush or a combination of aspen and oakbrush. The trail is of medium difficulty.

General Information

From Collbran, follow Colorado Highway 330 across the Plateau Creek bridge and turn left (west) and travel 1/4 mile.  The Kimball Creek Road, County Rd #58.6, climbs steeply to the north from the Plateau Creek drainage. Travel for approximately 5.5 miles to the Grand Mesa National Forest boundary where Kimball Creek Road becomes Forest Service Road #275. At this point take the spur road, FSR 275.1A, which forks off to the right. Travel for approximately 0.4 mile to the western (lower) trailhead of the Kimball Creek Trail #532. Follow the Kimball Creek Trail for 4.43 miles where it intersects with Battlement Trail #527. Travel east on Battlement Trail for approximately one-quarter mile to the upper trailhead of Smalley Mountain Trail.

Access to the lower trailhead of Smalley Mountain is through private land, and is normally not open to the public; however, it may be accessed  by way of Hawxhurst Trail #530 which intersects Smalley Mountain trail at its lower trailhead. This approach would only be practical if you were already approaching the general area from above, traveling west on the Battlement Trail.
