Hurricane Helene Information

In response to the widespread damage caused by Hurricane Helene, some areas on the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and Clinch Ranger District are closed. The Forest Service is working with federal and state partners, industry, and with the local communities we serve to make sure roads, trails, and recreation sites are safe. We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding. As we complete assessments of conditions, we will work to open areas when we know they are safe for users. Whitetop Station is a great starting point for an exciting bike ride down the Virginia Creeper Trail. Whitetop Station is a visitor center that shares the story of the local train history and mountain community through displays of historic photos and memorabilia. The current building, constructed in 2000, replaces the original train station that sat atop the highest point on the Abingdon Branch of the Norfolk and Western Rail Lines until it was abandoned in 1977.

Operational Hours:	Whitetop Station Visitor Center is open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. There are no concessions at Whitetop Station Visitor Center however, souvenirs are available.

Directions: From US Hwy 58: Travel east from Abingdon into Grayson County. Turn right on VA Route 726 and head south toward the North Carolina border. You will see the parking area off of 726.
