Chief Benge Scout Trail (Forest Trail #401)

The Chief Benge Scout Trail is a challenging trail that starts at High Knob Observation Tower and continues east for 15.6 miles to the Little Stony National Recreation Trail. In these 15.6 miles, it connects to the Bark Camp Lakeshore Trail, High Knob Lakeshore Trail, and High Knob Recreation Area. The trail is named after Chief Robert Benge, or Captain Benge, a Cherokee leader in the central Appalachians in the late 1700s.

Restrictions: When recreating on Forest Service Lands, follow the Forest Rules for Visitors and Forest Supervisor’s Orders
Motorized use, including e-bikes, is prohibited. Trails is open to hiking and biking. This trail may not be suitable for horseback riding. 

All visitors should follow Tread Lightly and Leave No Trace guidelines.

Water: No drinking water available. All water taken from natural sources should be purified before use.
Restroom: Flush toiles at High Knob Recreation Area during open season.

General Information


From Norton VA: Follow SR 619 for 3.8 miles. Turn left onto FR 238 and follow for 0.5 miles to the entrance for the High Knob Observation Tower. The trail starts to the left of the steps that leave the parking lot toward the tower.
