Council Lake Campsites

The four primitive campsites are located in a mixed stand of hardwood and beech trees on the south shore of Council Lake. There is fishing in Council Lake for yellow perch, rock bass, bluegill, largemouth bass, black crappie, bullhead and northern pike. The 12 acre Council Lake is part of a small chain of lakes and offers excellent canoeing and kayaking. Each campsite has a fire pit. A toilet is located near site #1. Bring your own toilet paper. No drinking water is available. Bring your own or filter or boil lake water to make it safe to drink. Link to Map

Fees: Camping fee is $8 per night per site. Federal Recreation Passes (Golden/America the Beautiful) are accepted. 
Permit Info: Camping at Council Lake is by reservation only. Walk ins are not allowed. These sites may be reserved for up to 14 days. Reservations are made on the national recreation reservation system. To check availability of the campsites or to make a reservation, call 877-444-6777 or go to www.recreation.gov .

General Information

Directions:

From Munising, take M-28 east towards Shingleton. Turn right (south) on FH-13 at Wetmore and drive 9.9 miles south on H-13 to Forest Road 2661. Turn right (west) onto the unpaved, FR2661 and drive 1.7 miles until it dead ends at Council Lake.

Campground Camping

On the shores of Council Lake, the campground is situated in a mixed stand of hardwood trees. There are four primitive camping sites at Council Lake. Each campsite has a fire pit. A toilet is located near site #1. Bring your own toilet paper. No drinking water is available. Bring your own or filter or boil lake water to make it safe to drink. Campsites #2, #3 and #4 are located closest to the lake. No garbage service is available. Please take all of your trash with you.

Lake and Pond Fishing

Council Lake is a 14 acre lake. Boat access at the campground is hand carry in only. However, there is a boat launch on Red Jack Lake.

Canoeists and Kayakers will find Council Lake, and the adjoining two lakes, a relaxing, soothing paddle. Boat access at the campground is hand carry in only. However, there is a back in boat launch on Red Jack Lake .

Swimming

The beach on Council Lake is perfect for lounging and swimming. Lifeguards are not present. Children should be accompanied in the water by an adult at all times.
