Mack Lake Motorized Trail System

As riders travel on this trail they will pass by a variety of scenary types. The trail is mostly on a 0 - 10% grade, with some short sections at a 30% grade. The trail system is marked with orange confidence markers.

Bull Gap Hill Climb provides a challenge for experienced riders, while the trail section near Maltby Hills is available for trail riders with less experience.

This trail is shown on the Huron-Manistee National Forests Motor Vehicle Use Map, available in the Maps and Publications section. A map is also located on the MI-DNRE website.

Permit Info: Special Use Permit -
  • No special use permit is required for individuals or small groups (74 people or less).
  • Permits are required for commercial, event or large groups (75 people or more).
Visit the Passes and Permits section for more information on obtaining a special use permit. ORV Sticker - OHVs must display a valid ORV Sticker as required by State law. ORV Stickers may be obtained from the State of Michigan.

Bull Gap ORV Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Go straight and continue east on s. River Rd. for 5 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south on FR 4332 for 2 miles.
  • Turn right and travel west on FR 4276 for 1 mile.
  • The site is located on the right.

East Bull Gap Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Go straight and continue east on s. River Rd. for 5 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south on FR 4332 for 2 miles.
  • Turn right and travel west on FR 4276 for 1 mile.
  • The site is located on the left.

Hughes Lake Rd. ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south on M-33 for 9 miles.
  • Turn left and travel east on Hughes Lake Rd. for 1 mile.

M-33 ORV Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south on M-33 for 8.5 miles.

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south on M-33 for 6 miles.
  • Turn left and travel east on County Rd. 604 for 4 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on FR 4460 for 1 mile.
  • Turn left and travel west on County Rd. 489 for 1 mile.

Maltby Hills ORV Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south M-33 for 6 miles.
  • Turn left and travel east on County Rd. 604 for 5 miles.
  • Turn right and travel south on Mack Lake Trail for 6 miles.
  • Turn right into the parking area.

McKinley ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-72 for 30 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on M-72/M-33 for .5 miles.
  • Turn right and trvel east on McKinley Dr./F32.
  • Turn right and travel southon Evans Rd. for .25 miles.
  • The site is located on the right.

From West Branch

Lupton ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-55 for 5 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on M-33 for 11 miles.
  • Turn right and travel east on Heath Rd. for 5.5 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on Doll Rd. for 2 miles.
  • The site is located on the right.

South Branch ORV/Snowmobile Trailhead

  • Travel east on M-55 for 5 miles.
  • Turn left and travel north on M-33 for 11 miles.
  • Turn right and travel east on Heath Rd. for 11.5 miles.
  • The site is located on the right.

The 175-acre lake is surrounded by rolling jack pine plains and is a good location for wildlife viewing. The 42 site campground is primarily used by ORV trail riders.  There is a trailhead located in the campground.
