Indian Peak Trail #284

Description: This 4.7 mile single track secondary trail connects Trail 78 Simmons Ridge with the Red Ives Ranger Station. Major reconstruction of the very steep and rocky river- face slope was completed in 2006, making this trail a lot more enjoyable than it once was. Though still steep—climbing nearly 3000 feet in 4.5 miles—this trail does offer memorable views of the St. Joe River and scenic Simmons Peak area with the best view found at the junction with Trail 78 above Swimming Bear Lake. It is a very popular loop with Trail 478.

Directions:

Approximate driving time from Avery to the Trail 284 Indian Peak Trailhead at Red Ives Ranger Station is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

• Turn right at Gold Creek onto Road 218 and drive upriver 9.7 miles to the Trail 284 Indian Peak Trailhead at Red Ives Ranger Station.
