Mt. Ashland Campground

Area Status: Open

Mt. Ashland campground offers higher elevation (6,000 ft.) camping with great views and access to the nearby Pacific Crest Trail. Located along the Siskiyou Crest near the Mt. Ashland ski area, the crest is known for wildflowers, butterflies and bird watching opportunities.  The campground has vault toilets, but no potable water, and no garbage service.  Please "pack it out".

From I-5 west on Forest Road 20 approx. 10.5 miles to the campground on the left. One mile past the Mt Ashland Ski Resort.


Parking:

Two vehicles allowed per campsite including trailers. Additional vehicles should park in the Day Use parking area.

Activities

Mountain Biking

There are mountain bike trails on the adjacent Mt Ashland Ski Area one mile east of the campground.

Fees: Fees may be charged by the ski area.

Campground Camping

High elevation and great views of the Klamath River Canyon, Mt Shasta and beyond.  Many sites are shady.

RV Camping

RV camping at Mt Ashland is limited to small motorhomes and short trailers. The road to the campground is narrow and winding.

Day Use and picnicking are permitted at the Mt Ashland Campground. There is no fee for Day Use. Please use the Day Use parking whenever possible to allow campsites to remain available for campers.


Fire Information A current California Campfire Permit is required to use a camp stove, barbecue or have a campfire. Local fire restrictions supersede the campfire permit. Inquire at the Ranger Station before having a fire.

Backpacking

The PCT can be accessed in several places along the road to Mt Ashland Campground. There are great views of the Klamath River Canyon and beyond. To the west the PCT roughly follows the forest boundary and turns south at the southeast corner of the Red Buttes Wilderness. To the east, the trail leaves the forest and crosses I-5 into private and BLM lands.

Parking

When parking overnight or for extended periods at trailheads always secure all food, packaging and ice chests in the trunk of your vehicle.  Do not park in front of gates or partially obstruct a fire road.


Permits & Regulations

A current California Campfire Permit is required to use a camp stove, barbecue or have a campfire outside of developed areas. Local fire restrictions supersede the campfire permit. Inquire at the Ranger Station before having a fire. Please pack out all trash.  Do not burn or bury trash and food waste.  Bury human waste in at least 6 inches or more of soil, at least 100 feet away from any lake, stream, water course or trail.

Directions

The PCT runs parallel to Forest Service Road 20 and can be accessed at many locations along the road or at the Mt Ashland Campground.


Seasonal Information

Snow may cover or obscure trails at high elevations well into June depending on weather.

Viewing Wildlife

A good area for bird watching and deer.

Viewing Plants

Surrounding the Mt Ashland Campground and extending along the Siskiyou Crest for several miles the Mt Ashland-Siskiyou Peak Botanical Area is dominated by open glades and rocky brush fields. The area is home to the Mt Ashland Lupine, a plant species found nowhere else in the world.

Species Lupinus aridus ssp. ashlandensis, Horkelia hendersonii and 3 varieties of Botrychium.
Special Feature Late spring wild flowers and large native grasslands.

Great views from the campground to Mt Shasta and occasionally to Mt Lassen.
