Trail #106: The National Recreation Dog Canyon Trail is 5.5 miles long. It begins at Oliver Lee State Park and ends at Forest Road 90B. This beautiful trail traverses up from the desert to elevations over 2000' above its starting point and is a trail for the experienced hiker. The trail is open for the following uses: Hiking, Horseback Riding

 

At a Glance

Current Conditions: Access to Dog Canyon Trail is only accessible from the top at Forest Service Road 90b. The bottom part of the trail is closed because it runs from Forest Service land into Oliver Lee State Park, which is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please do not go into Oliver Lee State Park.
Usage: Light
Restrictions: No Mountain Bikes or motorized vehicles allowed

General Information

Directions:

From Alamogordo, take US-54 south 10 miles and turn left (east) onto Dog Canyon Rd.  Follow this road eastward 4 miles until it ends at Oliver Lee State Park.  The trailhead can be found just past the visitor center.
