Starr Campground

Area Status: Open

Starr Campground is located just off of US Highway 395 making it very easy to get to. The campground has an upper level that is closer to the highway, yet still set back amongst beautiful pondersa pines. The lower part of the campground is set further back in the pine trees allowing for a more secluded experience. This beautiful campground sets in a prime spot for hunters, hikers and wildlife enthusiats. Within a 7 mile drive of the campground are numerous trailheads leading into the beautiful Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. Just a few more miles down the road is beautiful Logan Valley, this area is amazing during the spring, summer and fall months affording wildflower, wildlife and scenery viewing.

Starr Campground is a great base camp spot for those wanting to explore the Murderers Creek area and have the opportunity to see the wildhorses that reside there.

Campground Camping

This 11 site campground is an excellent place for visitors to stop while traveling between John Day, OR., and Hines, OR. Set just off of US Highway 395 south of John Day this campground is most popular during big game hunting season.

Day Hiking

Located near the west end of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, Starr Campground is within a short driving distance to many trails. For those looking for a short hike in the vicinity Swick Old Growth Interpretive Site is a fantastic hike through old growth ponderosa pine trees within just a few miles of the campground.

Big Game Hunting

Big game hunters enjoy this campground in fall and early winter months. Hunting for Mule deer, Rocky Mountain Elk and wild turkey's are favorites. For regulation and license information please visit the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Viewing Wildlife

Visitors to the area can enjoy a wide range of wildlife throughout the area. From big game animals such as Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer, cougar and black bear to a large variety of birds and smaller creatures like squirrels and chipmunks. Visitors can start at the campground then head out to the Murderers Creek area, allowing for the opportunity to see wild horses that live in the area.

Viewing Plants

Throughout the spring and summer visitors have the opportunity to view a beautiful variety of plants. Plants range from stunning wildflowers in spring and early summer to strawberry and huckleberry bushes producing berrys later in the season. The campground is nestled in a beautifully forested area of ponderosa pine, providing a wonderful place for a shady rest during a hot summer day.
