Lake Creek Trail #378

This trail located in the south side of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, travels through open stands of pine and meadows to High Lake. No developed trailhead; parking is extremely limited.  This trail is a great day hike to beautiful High Lake, and connects to many others for those wishing for longer multiday backpacking trips.  The Lake Creek Trail connects to Skyline Trail #385 that ties into other trails allowing for a 17 mile loop that gives access to multiple lakes in the wilderness including Strawberry Lake. 

Good water flow, even in a dry year, result in several wet spots to maneuver across.

General Information

Directions:

From Prairie City, OR., turn onto South Main Street to the junction with Bridge Street.  Turn left onto Bridge Street, follow the road past the local cemetary the road then becomes County Road 62.  Follow County Road 62 to Summit Prairie. Go west on Forest Road 16 approximately 7 miles to the junction wtih Forest Road 924. Follow Forest Road 924 for approximately 5 miles, the trailhead is located at the end of Forest Road 924.

Activities

Day Hiking

This 4 mile trail is a great starting point for those wishing to explore the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. For those looking to explore the wilderness further, the Lake Creek Trail connects to the Skyline Trail #385.  Head west on Skyline Trail #385, this trail allows access to other trails giving visitors the opportunity to visit the beautiful lakes in the wilderness such as Slide Lake, High Lake, Strawberry and Little Strawberry Lakes.

Backpacking

Good water flow, even in a dry year, result in several wet spots to maneuver across.

This trail connects to Skyline Trail #385 which will connect to Pine Creek Trail #201 at Roads End trailhead allowing for many options for backpacking trips.

Horse Riding

Riders can enjoy a beautiful ride through ponderosa pine trees, the Lake Creek Trail can continue their exploration of the wilderness by connecting to other trails.  Enjoy this 8 mile round trip trail or connect to Skyline trail #385 and travel west to explore further trails such as Slide Basin Trail #372 allowing access to Slide Lake.  Continue on the Skyline Trail #385 to High Lake, or stay on the trail to the High Lakes Trailhead, leave the trail for less than a mile to reach the Road's End Trailhead.  From the Roads End Trail #201A riders can then explore the western end of the wilderness on the Pine Creek Trail #201 or the Onion Creek Trail #368 which will give access to the peak of Strawberry Mountain, this trail has a steap grade when heading to the connection with Strawberry Basin Trail #375

The Strawberry Basin Trail #375 leads to Strawberry Falls, Little Strawberry Lake and then down to Strawberry Lake.  From Strawberry Lake riders can connect back to the Slide Basin Trail #372 allowing for a long loop ride.

This trail is used by hikers, please be prepared to share the trail. 

Please use certifed weed free hay, remove any unused hay when leaving the area.

Big Game Hunting

Big game hunting is popular in the wilderness from fall through early winter.  Rocky Mountain Elk and mule deer are hunted throughout the wilderness.  For regulations and license information please visit the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife
