Horseshoe Trail #363

The trail begins as a narrow dirt road, narrowing to a shared use trail after about 3/4 of a mile. You may encounter motorized users.The trail climbs abruptly up and continues to be fairly steep. Water is not available and must be carried in. The trail runs through a brushy area that was burned in a wildfire.

General Information

Directions:

From Prairie City, OR., turn onto South Main Street.  Follow South Main Street to the junction with Bridge Street.  Turn left onto Bridge Street and continue past the cemetary, the road then becomes County Road 62.  Follow County Road 62 to the junction with Forest Service Road 13.  Follow Forest Service Road 13 approximately 12 miles to the trailhead.

Activities

Mountain Biking

This trail is a nice 6 mile ride through a beautifully forested area. Those wishing to ride further can connect to other trails such as the Sunshine Flat Trail #369 adding another 3.7 miles to the ride.  At the same junction with Sunshine Flat Trail #369 riders can also connect to Sheep Creek Trail #371 and travel another 5.4 miles.  Riders can then connect to Forest Road 13 and travel north approximately 3 miles to connect back to the horseshoe trail.

This trail is used by hikers, horseback riders as well as OHV riders please be prepared to share the trail.

Day Hiking

This trail is a great place for anyone looking to spend a day enjoying a hike that is fairly steep.  This 6.0 mile hike ends at a junction with two other trails near the summit of Lookout Mountain.  For those looking for a longer hike there are two options, hikers can take the Sunshine Flat Trail #369 for to extend their hike another 3.7 miles.  This is not a loop hike.  The second option would be to take the Sheep Creek Trail #371 for another 5.4 miles.  This trail does connect back to Forest Road 13, hikers can then travel north another 3 miles back to the Horseshoe Trail #363.

Viewing Wildlife

The area is abundant with wildlife.  From big game animals such as Rocky Mountain Elk and mule deer to a wide variety of birds and smaller animals such squirrels and chipmunks. 

Viewing Scenery

Visitors to the trail will enjoy a hike through a heavily wooded area that opens up towards the end near Lookout Summit.  From the end of the trail visitors can see out across a beautiful valley towards other mountain peaks such as Glacier Mountain. 

OHV Trail Riding

This trail can is open to OHV's however the trail is narrow please use caution on this trail.
