Malheur Ford Trailhead


Area Status: Open

A small site with vault toilet and picnic facilities in the Malheur Wild and Scenic River is a popular place to fly fish, those looking to hike are within steps of the Malheur River Trail.

This quiet site is a light use site, it does tend to get busier during late summer for big game hunting seasons.

Current Conditions: 12/08/2021: The trailhead is open. Visitors should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Some roads become impassible due to snow, ice or mud during the winter months. Please be aware that bathrooms will not be cleaned every day. Pack it in/Pack it out- anything you bring with you into the forest, please take home with you. This includes packing out all trash, yours and others. Examples: cigarette butts, cans, bottles, and food. Please follow local and state health guidelines.

General Information

Directions:

In the town of Seneca, OR., turn east onto Forest Service Road 16.  Follow Forest Service Road 16 approximately 18 miles to the junction with Forest Service Road 1647.  Follow Forest Service Road 1674 for approximately 6 miles to the junction with Forest Service Road 1651, follow Forest Service 1651 for approximately 4 miles to the Ford, the trailhead is on the opposite side of the river.

Activities

River and Stream Fishing

Anglers can enjoy a day of fishing at the trailhead.  Rainbow Trout can be caught in the river.  Bull Trout are also present but must be released back into the river if caught.  For regulation and license information please visit the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Day Hiking

Within steps of the Malheur River Trail #303 hikers can travel along the Malheur River as it traverses along the steep canyon walls before dropping to scenic river banks lined with old growth pondersoa pine, larch and fir trees.  Designated as a Wild and Scenic River this remote trail provides travelers with unrivaled rugged beauty as well as solitude. 

This is not a loop trail.  Visitors beginning at the Malheur River Trailhead will have a steep hike up out of the canyon to Hog Flat Trailhead.
