Hammond Canyon Trail

The Hammond Trail #012 is 6.4 miles long.  The trailhead is located at Forest Road #088 (Elk Ridge) at Little Notch.  The trail follows Hammond Canyon passing its many side canyons and sandstone rock spires, to an intersection with Forest Trails #166 (Posey) and #005 (Cream Pots).  This trail can be combined with Forest Trails #166 (Posey) and #005 (Cream Pots) as well as South Elk Ridge Road (#088) and South Elks Road (#092) to create overnight backpacking loops or one-way through hikes.


Elevation Change:

West End (Road #088):  8,244 feet

East End (Trail #005):     6,056 feet

Water: A perennial stream provides water in Hammond Canyon, but users should carry water and purifying kit.
Restroom: A facility is located at the beginning of this route.

General Information


From Blanding, head south on US-191 S/S Main St and travel 3.9 miles.  Turn right onto UT-95 N and travel 6.3 miles.  Turn right onto Co Rd 228/Cottonwood and travel 4.9 miles.   Slight left to stay on Co Rd 288/Cottonwood and travel 0.4 miles.  Continue onto South Elks Road #092 and travel 14.6 miles.  Slight right onto Elk Ridge Road #088 and travel 2.0 miles to Hammond Canyon Trail #012.
