East Fork trail

This 15.7 mile moderate to difficult trail takes you along the north side of Stillwater Reservoir. It is open to hiking and horseback riding, but snowdrifts may limit horse travel in early summer. At mile 0.8, there is a registration/information board and the split-off to trail #1120 to the left and trail #1119 to the right. From here, the trail turns north and reaches the Flat Tops Wilderness boundary at mile 1.0, the trail is mostly forested to Little Causeway Lake at mile 1.6, The trail climbs among talus slopes to the Bear River/Williams Fork watersheds divide at mile 2.3, where breathtaking views await you. The trail becomes steep while elevation change is over 1500’ making this hike moderate to difficult through series of switchbacks to the Devils Causeway. Continuing on, the trail reaches Causeway Lake at mile 5.7.  At mile 7.0, find Round Lake and the #1116 trail junction. From here the trail descends, then crosses and follows the East Fork of the Williams Fork River, intersecting trail #1117 at mile 8.9.  Further on, you re-cross the river and climb to rejoin with trail #1116 at mile 11.6.  Heading down valley, trail #1172 is at mile 13.0, the Wilderness Boundary at mile 13.4. The trail ends at the Pyramid Guard Station at mile 15.7. Here you will find a vault toilet and a trailhead parking lot. This trail starts at 10280 ft (3133m) and ends at 8402 ft (2561m) at the Pyramid Guard Station, with its highest point at 11600 ft (3536m) at the Bear River/Williams Fork divide. Usage is moderate to heavy June to November, with heaviest usage near Devil’s Causeway cut-off.

General Information


Southern access: From Yampa, CO, follow County Road 7 west to Forest Road 9, 6.4 miles. Continue on FR 9 for 8.6 miles to trailhead parking at Stillwater Reservoir. 

Northern access: From Yampa, CO, follow County Road 17 north for 5.0 miles to CR 132. Follow 132 west, 3.4 miles, where road enters Forest and becomes  FR 16. Follow 16 to trailhead parking opposite Pyramid Guard Station, 18.0 miles.
