Bear Lake Campground

Please note,
the Bear Lake Campground and surrounding area has been experiencing record high traffic and has been at full capacity on weekends this season and all sites are first come basis (no reservations). Please note, if campsites fill, this area does not offer dispersed camping. All camping is developed designated sites indicated by a post with a number of the campsite on it. The making of new campsites or camping at trailheads or day use area are not allowed.

The Bear Lake Campground is located in the Flat Tops 11 miles outside of Yampa, Colorado on Forest Service Road 900, adjacent to Bear River, between Yamcolo Reservoir and Stillwater Reservoir.

The campground is composed of 2 loops in dense tree cover of Engelmann Spruce, Subalpine Fir and a few Aspen and Lodgepole.

*Although the lake is adjacent to the campground, the campsites are NOT on the lake and do not offer a lake view or views of the Flat Tops. A few sites offer partial views of the towering black cliffs that identify the wilderness boundary.

NUMBER OF SITES: 43 (including 2 double sites, and 1 triple site)
MAX TRAILER LENGTH: 30ft (trailers longer in length can find larger sites outside of the campground along FS RD 900 and many offer pull through capability as well.)

AMENITIES: Picnic tables, vault toilets, potable water, fire grates and trash service.

ELEVATION: 9,500 ft. 

DAY USE AREA: Yes, with fishing pier and picnic area

CAMP HOST ON SITE: Yes 

AMENITIES: Vault toilets, trash, potable water, bear containers, fire grates, picnic tables, and camp hosts to answer questions. Outside of the campground is a free day use area with a fishing pier.

NEAREST RV WASTE STATION: Located at the Stagecoach State Park outside of Oak Creek, or at the KOA campground in Steamboat Springs, CO

BOAT REGULATIONS: Electric trolling motors are allowed. Internal combustion engines are not allowed. (Combustion engines only allowed at Yamcolo Reservoir within a few miles).

RECREATION: Fishing/Hiking/Boating/Stand-up Paddle Board.
 

HIKING NEARBY: *Please note, most hiking trails typically still have snow and are not accessible until late June.

Operational Hours: SEASON: Weather can create a short season if there are late spring snows and/or early fall snows.
Open June to mid-September (varies due to snow fall)

Directions:

Directions from Yampa: Travel S/SW on Routt County Rd #7 approximately 7 miles to FSR 900. Travel another 4 miles on FSR 900 to Bear Lake Campground on the left side of the road.
