This is a reservation only, group campground situated in the forest along the North Fork Nooksack River. The area has two separate group sites. The sites are in a private forested setting is between the Mt. Baker Highway highway and the river. Many Douglas-fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock trees provide abundant shade.
As of 2012 Excelsior Group Campground is under reconstruction but still open for use. Project work is slated to be completed by 2013.
From Glacier Washington, travel 7 miles east on Mt. Baker Highway SR 542. The campground is located down an access road on the southside of the highway just before milepost 40, and is marked with a brown and yellow National Forest Recreation Site Identification Sign.
There are two large group sites in the campground. Site A will accomodate up to 50 people and has picnic tables with fire pits and a picinic shelter. Site B can accommodate up to 75 persons and has it's own picinic shelter, tables and fire pits. Site B has more privacy, as you must drive through Site A to reach it.
Limited groceries and firewood are available 7 miles west in Glacier, Washington and a little further west in Maple Falls is the last gas station along this route.
A nice combination of sun and shade, this campground offers a nice section of the river to explore when you're not sitting by the campfire roasting marshmallows. The sites are located on flat, even ground, but the vault toilets are not handicap accessible. Access to the Nooksack Falls and the Excelsior Pass route to High Divide Trail #670 are within one mile east on the Mt. Baker Highway.
