John Muir Nature Trail 1204

  

This nature trail is dedicated to John Muir, an American naturalist, author and early advocate of wilderness preservation who helped create the national parks. This 0.5 barrier-free trail is open to wheelchairs and passes through large old growth timber. The the Civilian Conservation Corps build the trail and Dalles Campground in 1935.

Begin at nearby Dalles Campground. Visitors can enjoy gazing up at the “big tree,” an old-growth Douglas fir measuring 9.5-feet in diameter and more than 700-years old. The tree can be found at the west end of the Dalles Campgrounds near the beginning of the Dalles River Trail.

Current Conditions: Developed recreation sites including trailheads, restrooms, picnic areas, visitor centers, interpretive sites, boat launches, and campgrounds are temporarily closed to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). It is still okay to park on a road next to the Forest and access trails; however, state and local ordinances may apply in some areas. Users must abide by all Federal, local, and state laws. Blocking, or impeding, vehicle traffic or damaging natural resources may result in citation and/or towing.
Fees $5 day use fee or Recreation Pass is required for each vehicle parked at the trailhead.

  • Dogs must be on a leash.

Directions:

Drive east on State Highway 410 25.8 miles to the Dalles Campground on the right. Turn right into the Dalles Campground and go straight 300 feet to the picnic shelter. Follow the loop to left another 300 feet to the trailhead on the right.
