Rimel Area Trails

Laurel Creek Trail #446 is an 8.8-mile looping trail that begins directly behind the information kiosk at Rimel Picnic Area. The route is marked with blue trail blazes. The western half of this trail is fairly level and follows an old railroad grade along Laurel Creek and Lockridge Run. There are several stream crossings, but water levels are normally low enough to easily pass. The eastern half of the trail climbs and crosses Lockridge Mountain. Near the midpoint of the trail, there is an Adirondack-style shelter with a fire ring and picnic table. The closest water source is at the Pocahontas Campground.

Middle Mountain Trail #608 is a 20-mile linear trail that starts directly across HWY 39 from Rimel Picnic Area and travels south to Neola, WV. This trail climbs Middle Mountain as a narrow footpath. After 1 mile, the trail levels off and follows a grassy lane along the ridge-top. An Adirondack-style shelter is located at 3.5 miles from this trailhead. The southern terminus of the trail reaches the North Fork of Anthony Creek, across from Forest Road 96. The route is marked with blue trail blazes. The closest source for drinking water is Pocahontas Campground.

Allegheny Trail (ALT) #701 is a 330-mile trail that spans the entire state of West Virginia and leads into Virginia. It begins near Bruceton Mills, WV at the Mason-Dixon Line and continues south to Peters Mountain near Pearisburg, VA. ALT is maintained by the WV Scenic Trails Association (WVSTA). There are 42.6 miles of the ALT traversing the Marlinton Ranger District divided into two segments. One section is from ‘The Dock’ on County Road 23 (Douthat’s Creek Rd) just south of Minnehaha Springs to Huntersville (20.4 miles). The other section is from Huntersville to Sitlington, near Dunmore (22.2 miles). Due to its span, the trail consists of old and new bridges and trail, Forest Service roads, state park and forest roads/trails, and short sections of county and state highways. Yellow trail blazes mark its route.

Two Lick (#456) and Two Lick Bottom (#457) Two Lick (#456) and Two Lick Bottom (#457) Trailhead is located at the Pocahontas Campground, south on WV-92 from Rimel Picnic Area. Two Lick Trail #456 and Two Lick Bottom #457 are looping trails located adjacent to Pocahontas Campground. Directly behind the trailhead kiosk, you will cross over a footbridge that leads to the intersection where the trail splits into two loops. Two Lick Trail #456 veers to the left from this intersection and gradually climbs the ridge encircling the drainage. This trail is just over 4 miles long. The path on the right leads to Two Lick Bottom Trail # 457, following and crossing Two Lick Run several times. This is the shorter of the loops, at only 0.8 miles. Both trails bring you through the oak-hickory forest, although there are many sections of pine and hemlock on the ridges and bottomlands.
