Stuart Recreation Day Use Area

Stuart Day Use Area and Campground is nestled in the mountains of West Virginia along the Shavers Fork River, Located approximately 6 miles NE of Elkins at the junction of WV Route 6 and Forest Road 91 (Stuart Memorial Drive), it was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

The day use area offers tables, grills, and waste receptacles for picnicking, as well as three reservable pavilions. 

The campground has 25 sites for single use, 1 double site, and 1 group camping site for larger groups. Electricity, showers, and flush toilets are available at the campground.

Operational Hours: Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the open season. 
Reservations: Camp sites 7-15 are reservable, as are the pavilions. Reservations can be made online or by calling (877) 444-6777. Individual picnic sites in Day Use Area are not reservable.

Directions:

From Elkins take US Route 33 east for approximately 4 miles. Turn north on WV 33/8 (old US Route 33) and follow signs. Turn north on WV Route 6 and drive 1/2 mile to the entrance.

Activities

Mountain Biking

There is a hiking trail in the recreation area: River Loop Trail - #119 which is 2 miles in length.

Campground Camping

Each campsite has a parking spur, table, fire ring, tent pad, lantern holder, and electric hookup. Water spigots are available throughout the campground. All campsites are suitable for both tent and trailer camping and can accommodate a 53-foot tow/vehicle combination.  A shower facility is available.

RV Camping

Campsites are suitable for tent or trailer camping.

Group Camping

A large grassy area for group tent camping is located just north of the entrance on State Route 6. It is open year round and has picnic tables, fire rings, accessible vault toilets, and a water spigot.  A shower facility is available.

River and Stream Fishing

Catch and release fishing is allowed in the Shavers Fork River. A state fishing license, National Forest Stamp, a Conservation stamp, and trout stamp are required. Please contact the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources for more information on fishing and hunting licensing requirements.

Day Hiking
