Walking Bridge at Lake Sherwood

The Lake Sherwood Area Trail System offers 18 miles of trails for day hikes to visitors of this popular recreation area. The trail system provides access for fishing, hunting and backpacking opportunities as well. Trails are best suited for hiking, although several trails are popular mountain bike routes. Access to the trail system is provided at the Lake Sherwood Recreation Area. Trails are marked with blue diamond blazes. A fee is charged for parking from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Highlighted Trails

Lake Sherwood Trail (TR 601)

This 3.7 mile encircles Lake Sherwood. The trailhead is located in the Lake Sherwood picnic area parking lot. Waterfowl about during fall and spring migrations. Beaver activity can also be spotted as well as reptiles, amphibians, birds, and a host of other wildlife. 

Allegheny Mountain Trail (TR 611)

Traveling along the top of Allegheny Mountain, this 3.6 mile trail offers views of Lake Moomaw to the east and Lake Sherwood to the west. 

Meadow Mountain Trail (TR 610)

This 3.5 mile trail provides panoramic views of Meadow Creek Valley and Lake Sherwood. It follows an old woods road along the top of Meadow Creek Mountain.

Directions:

From White Sulphur Springs: Head northeast on E Main St toward Mill Hill Ave. Turn left onto WV-92 N/Pocahontas Trail (15.4 mi). Turn right onto Lake Sherwood Rd (3.8). Continue straight to stay on Lake Sherwood Road (6.4 mi). Turn right to reach the Lake Sherwood Recreation Area.

From Rimel: Head southwest on WV-92 S (15.7 mi). Turn left onto Lake Sherwood Rd (3.8 mi). Continue straight to stay on Lake Sherwood Rd (6.4 mi). Turn right to reach the Lake Sherwood Recreation Area.

Day Hiking

Numerous loop trail opportunities exist in the Lake Sherwood area for everyone from the beginning hiker to the experienced backpacker.

The shortest, most popular trail is a 3.5 mile scenic loop around Lake Sherwood, the Lake Sherwood Trail. Other trails may be accessed via this trail, including the Virginia Trail, Upper Meadow Trail, and Meadow Creek Trail.

Difficulty Level: Easy to Difficult

Backpacking

Numerous loop trail opportunities exist in the Lake Sherwood area for everyone from the beginning hiker to the experienced backpacker.

Trails in the area connect to longer routes, including the Middle Mountain Trail and Lauel Creek Trail.
