Red Tail Rim Trail South Trailhead

The Red Tail Rim Trail South Trailhead is the staging area for riding, hiking or mountain biking the Red Tail Rim Trail. There are hitching posts but no corrals. This trail is not a loop. The opposite trailhead is located at Red Tail Rim Trail North, about 8 miles north of Adin along Hwy 299/139.

Ash Creek Campground is located south of this trailhead.

Directions:

From Adin go east on County Road 88 approximately 8 miles to County Road 22 and follow the signs to the Trailhead.  Ash Creek Campground is also in this area.

Activities

Mountain Biking

This is one of the few trails designated for mountain biking in the Modoc National Forest.  This trail is not a loop and the opposite trailhead is located at Red Tail Rim Trail North, about 8 miles north of Adin along Hwy 299/139.

Please be alert for horses and hikers along this trail.  Stop and step downhill when encountering horses.  Share the trail.

Day Hiking

Hikers may spend as much or as little time as they wish on this charming trail. This trail is also very popular with horses and mountain bikers.  Be sure you step off the trail on the downhill side when you encounter horses as horses and pack animals have right-of-way.  Please share the trail.

Horse Riding

Horse back riding is popular on this trail.  This trail is not a loop.  The opposite trailhead is located at Red Tail Rim Trail North, along Hwy 299/139 about 8 miles north of Adin.

Please be aware that mountain bikers and hikers may be encountered along your ride.  We ask that hikers and bikers be courteous and step downhill from the trail when encountering horses.  Share the trail.

Picnicking

Day use for picnicking is a great way to spend a day anywhere on your National Forest.
