Cast Lake Trail

This trail lies within the Mount Hood Wilderness. Wildflower displays can be found in this area. There are several views of Mount Hood from the high points along the lakeshore. There are also several campsites located on the bluffs overlooking the north and east side of the lake. The trail begins from Zigzag Mountain Trail #775 and ends at Cast Lake.

This trail can be accessed from a number of trails. The shortest route is from the south end of Burnt Lake Trail #772, leaving from the trailhead at Forest Road 2627-207. Hike 2.4 miles northeast on Burnt Lake Trail #772 to its junction with Devil’s Tie Trail #767. Go left on Devil’s Tie Trail #767 for 0.3 mile to Zigzag Mountain Trail #775. Go north on Zigzag Mountain Trail #775 for 0.2 mile to its junction with Cast Lake Trail #796. The trail climbs 0.2 mile before dropping 0.3 mile to Cast Lake. The trail splits near the lake. The trail to the right leads to the north end of the lake with camping areas. The trail to the left leads to the south end of the lake.

General Information


From Sandy, OR - head east on Highway 26 about 30 miles to the junction with Lolo Pass Rd/Forest Road 18. Head north of FR 18 until the fork for FR 1825 on the right. Within a mile of the last turn, take your next right to join the FR 1825.382. Follow this until your destination on the left.


This trail is on the southwest slope of Mt. Hood. It can be accessed from a variety of trails including: from the north via Burnt Lake Trail #772 (5.2 miles) or Cast Creek Trail #773 (5.2 miles); from the west via Horseshoe Trail #774 (5.6 miles) or Zigzag Mountain Trail #775 (8.0 miles); or from the south via Burnt Lake Trail #772 and Devil’s Tie Trail #767 (2.7 miles).
